It was Kirsties passion and expertise in natural building that drew us to her. During the process we found Kirstie to also be reliable, prompt, friendly and extremely good at navigating all the building codes and documentation.Posted on Google Catherine SalatTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We engaged Kirstie a few years ago to design our dream home. We had a reasonable idea of what we wanted, and Kirstie had no problems in understanding our brief and adding useful thoughts and ideas to it. She managed all the Council paperwork and kept us in the loop the whole way. The house was delayed in being built due to our initial builder going bust. Kirstie was very supportive with a few things during this process, too. She was also there to help our new builder with bits and pieces regarding the Hempcrete. Kirstie suggested the Hempcrete, which we both were excited to use. Our house is now built and absolutely beautiful. The reality of our plans is more than we expected. Kirstie was available, knowledgeable and super helpful. I would highly recommend Sheltered Building Design for your new home build or renovations.Posted on Google Jillian NaiduTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Where to start… After the devastation of the 2019 bushfires and two failed attempts to rebuild we were so pleased to connect with Shelter Building Design. We were interested in hempcrete and impressed with its environmental sustainability and bushfire properties. Kirstie was the right person for the job. With her knowledge and understanding of this wonderful product we felt at ease all the way throughout the process. Kirstie was on the ball when it came to understanding council and bushfire requirements and was always quick to respond to our needs. We love our new home and everyone is impressed by the simplicity snd ease of the design. Plus the beautiful hemp walls. We highly recommend Kirstie if you have a project in mind and require a stress free experience. After our house, near Mogo, on the NSW south coast was destroyed by fire on new year's eve 2019, we worried a lot about whether or not to rebuild. We did not want to make ourselves vulnerable again, especially considering our rural property is not on town water, on sloped land and 200 metres from a vast state forest. After a failed relationship with one architect we were referred to Kirstie Wulf and Shelter building design. Kirstie understood our location, our concerns and our priorities. We talked about passive solar, fire resistance and our budgetary limits. Kirstie came up with a design around the use of hempcrete (which we knew little about beforehand), no external timber, double glazing, and north facing. Now completed the house soaks in the sunlight, tempers both heat and cold, is quiet and calming and aesthetically enriching. The internal hempcrete walls make it feel like the house is breathing with us. They have depth and texture and are a continual source of wonder. Our relationship with Kirstie was both professional and friendly. Her expertise was communicated with consideration and respect. She developed a good working relationship with our builder and helped him to understand and appreciate aspects of the design, most particularly, the use of hempcrete. She also connected him (and us) with the highly professional team that put the hempcrete in place. As I had the time I managed some of the government, engineering and certification issues while Kirstie ensured issues of sustainability, bushfire, sewage and wastewater were addressed in the design and through the necessary compliance processes. There was a lot to do and all got done. As regards the building process, I located a local builder through recommendations from local connections. He quickly made contact with Kirstie. All sub-contractors were responsible and reliable. Our only difficulty was with a renderer who needed to be chased up more than is ideal. On one occasion, we needed the original design to be pulled back (from 4br to 3br) for financial reasons and Kirstie managed this very quickly and very effectively. Throughout the process she was easy to contact and quick to address concerns. She understood (understands) the process and the pressure it places on clients and this enabled us to manage our various stressors. In the end we have a welcoming home. It fits our needs and it was accomplished at a manageable cost. Kirstie was central to it all. She was informed, available and open to questions and considerations. We have already recommended her to people considering domestic, community and commercial projects. The service she offers is personalised, uniquely informed and focussed on strategic sustainability.Posted on Google Brent HoareTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I am absolutely delighted to share my exceptional experience with Kirstie Wulf and her business, Shelter Building Design, which earned a well-deserved National Building Designers Award for our new house build. From start to finish, Kirstie demonstrated unparalleled expertise, particularly in her pioneering use of hempcrete design — an innovative natural material that uniquely suits our bushfire-prone site while dramatically enhancing the sustainability and durability of our home. Our project was a complete new build, embracing passive solar design and natural materials like hempcrete, home grown radiata pine benches and cupboards and reused materials like posts, brick and the front door. We engaged Kirstie for a full-service design that included concept design, development application documentation and comprehensive construction documentation. Her involvement extended well beyond the drafting table — she was hands-on throughout the entire construction process. Collaborating with Kirstie was a true partnership. Her communication was consistently clear, regular, and highly responsive. She listened intently to our needs and goals, always translating them into practical design solutions. Kirstie’s leadership shone through her ability to navigate complex constraints, including the sloping site, the narrow block, height variations, and our budget — she never compromised professionalism or reliability, and her problem-solving skills were outstanding. Kirstie’s design creativity is remarkable. She beautifully balanced aesthetic appeal with exceptional functionality, tailoring the home to our lifestyle, the site’s natural attributes, and sustainable principles. The solar passive design she championed fills our house with natural light and warmth during winter, reducing energy costs and environmental impact. Her detailed and well-resolved drawings and specifications made construction smooth and efficient. Kirstie’s deep knowledge of passive house standards, sustainable design, and natural materials like hempcrete truly set her apart. Her expertise in bushfire BAL compliance was critical in ensuring her projects are both resilient and safe. She also brought valuable local council and legal negotiation experience, which facilitated smooth approvals and adherence to regulations. The results speak for themselves — we now enjoy a stunningly comfortable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly home. Hempcrete has contributed not only to superior thermal performance and a low carbon footprint but also offers impressive bushfire resistance, giving us peace of mind. The thorough documentation and Kirstie’s support led to a seamless construction phase. Considering the exceptional service and impressive outcomes, Shelter Building Design offered excellent value for money. Kirstie’s friendly, approachable manner combined with her dedication to going above and beyond made the entire journey inspiring and stress-free. She provided clear explanations and offered continuous guidance, especially during challenging stages of the project. Her respect for our budget and constraints was always evident. I wholeheartedly recommend Kirstie Wulf and Shelter Building Design to anyone seeking a visionary, expert building designer — especially for new builds involving passive solar principles, hempcrete or natural materials, and bushfire-prone sites. Kirstie is perfectly suited for clients who value sustainability, innovative design, and hands-on leadership throughout the construction process. Kirstie has helped us create a stunningly beautiful and comfortable home that we cherish every day. Her award-winning design skills, commitment to sustainability, and exceptional client care make Shelter Building Design a standout in the industry.Posted on Google Jeremy ThomasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
