Excerpt Intro
Kirstie Wulf of Shelter Building Design designed and built her own home, making use of hemp-lime construction for its low embodied energy and thermal properties. The Culburra Beach house on the New South Wales south coast consists of three intersecting pavilions, two of which are angled to face true north.
The passive solar design and effective thermal mass means the house requires no heating or cooling. The rendered hemp walls provide good insulation, while the polished concrete slab provides thermal mass. The use of eaves and awnings block summer sun from entering internal spaces, but allow winter solar gain, while windows on three sides allow good cross ventilation to make the most of sea breezes.
