Step 4: Budget vs Cost

Budget Constraints and final cost

This step we will start with the Passive House Budget. There’s probably no other word we use in our industry that consistently causes so much angst. When we mention the word ‘budget’ in our client meetings, things sometimes get awkward.

For many, the cost of a project can feel like the single biggest hindrance to achieving desired outcomes. However, we like to think about budgets differently. We believe that the constraint of a budget creates accountability and creativity.

A budget gives us a reference point for all design decisions. It acts like a compass guiding the way and keeping your project on track and heading in the right direction.

Investing in your future…

Investing in your future

One of the considerations from people in your position is a concern about the extra construction costs involved with creating a high-performing home.

But did you know it can take just 5 to 6 years to recover the extra costs of building a Passive House? Along with that, your Passive House will be a quieter, more pest-resistant home, free of dust and pollutants. It will also boast an increased resale value over a standard home.

So designing and building a passive home is an investment in your future. But it’s more than that. This is a legacy that you’ll leave behind, and a statement now that you have made the decisions to live healthier, happier, more sustainable lives that won’t cost the planet and will save you money in the long term too.

As technology and systems improve home builders can take advantage of improved building systems. Most of our clients want more efficient and healthier homes with low running costs.

By now you are probably closer to understanding some of the many elements that go into the design of your sustainable, energy-efficient home. Keep a note of any questions, in the question sections of the design brief works well, so that our Passive House Design team can help you with each point at our next phone or on site meeting or via email.

We’ll help you navigate considerations such as building materials, land aspect, consultants (engineers, fire etc), council approval and contract administration. All these things will be considered in line with your design brief and home design style.

We’ll discuss all of the above at our site meeting which you may have booked in already. If not, reach out today so we can arrange this exciting step in the process. We look forward to meeting you!
